Capsicum spray is generally considered safe to use and handle, which makes it an ideal weapon for self defense. But you should know how to use, dispose and transport a canister of pepper spray to ensure your safety. If you make your own pepper spray, you should avoid touching the liquid directly. To produce homemade pepper spray, you must use goggles, apron and gloves. Make sure to not breathe any fumes from it during boiling, as it can cause chemical burns to the lungs and mucous membranes. Avoid re-using the tools you used to make pepper spray without thorough cleansing.
On the plus side, pepper spray is much safer than tear gas. It brings about physical incapacitation, which should work to your advantage if you need to run far from an attacker. On the other hand, you’ll want to be sure not to get any of the spray droplets on yourself to circumvent feeling the after effects.
